Rockstar has not published a GTA VI install size. Neither store page shows one as of 2 October 2026. The figure most often reported is just under 200 GB, from an unofficial leak. Any day-one patch size is a guess. Plan for roughly 240 GB free as a cautious assumption of ours, not a spec. The preload starts 12 November, so the real number should show on the store listing before launch.
The size claims
| Claim | Status | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Official install size | Not published | PlayStation and Xbox product pages, read 2 Oct 2026 |
| Likely larger than a 100 GB disc, so a download | Reported by Gfinity | Gfinity, 24 Jun 2026; it states no official size exists and gives no GB figure |
| Just under 200 GB on PS5 | Leak, reported by Upcomer (originating with a fan account) | Upcomer; leak, not Rockstar |
| Day-one patch size | Unconfirmed | Outlet guesses differ and none has a Rockstar source; the 40 GB below is our placeholder |
What fits where
Scenarios below are our arithmetic. Game sizes are 150 GB (our low case, no source), the reported 200 GB and a 250 GB stress case; each adds a 40 GB patch (our placeholder, not a reported figure). Usable space is what each maker's console leaves after the system, as reported by outlets; the console capacities come from the Sony and Microsoft pages.
| Console (capacity per maker page) | Usable space (reported) | Free after 150 GB game + patch | After 200 GB + patch | After 250 GB + patch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition, 825 GB (PlayStation) | About 667 GB | 477 GB | 427 GB | 377 GB |
| PS5 Pro, 2 TB | About 1.89 TB (Push Square, Nov 2024) | about 1.70 TB | about 1.65 TB | about 1.60 TB |
| Xbox Series X, 1 TB (Xbox) | About 802 GB | 612 GB | 562 GB | 512 GB |
| Xbox Series S, 512 GB (Xbox) | About 364 GB | 174 GB | 124 GB | 74 GB |
The 667, 802 and 364 GB usable figures are 2020 outlet reports (TechRadar, The FPS Review) and have not been read from a maker page (PlayStation says only that available space varies), so the table is Reported, not Confirmed. System software updates may have changed them. The PS5 Pro figure is for the 2 TB model; the 1 TB disc PS5's usable space was not checked.
Do you need to add storage?
Pick by what else is installed, not by GTA VI alone.
- Mostly GTA VI on a 1 TB-class console: no purchase needed on any scenario above.
- Series S (512 GB) or a library you do not want to delete: this is where the table shows pressure. At 200 GB plus our placeholder patch, about 124 GB is left.
- You will keep several large games installed: add storage once the real size is published, not before.
If you add storage
PS5 (Sony's own requirements): a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M), 250 GB to 8 TB, with 5,500 MB/s read speed or faster recommended, sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110, and a heatsink or other cooling structure. M.2 SATA drives are not supported (PlayStation Support, read 2 Oct 2026).
Xbox Series X|S: Microsoft's Series S page lists 1 TB Storage Expansion Cards that match internal performance and USB 3.1 external hard drives, both sold separately (Xbox, read 2 Oct 2026). Which drive can hold a Series X|S-optimised game is a Microsoft rule not re-read here; check it before buying.
Compare drives by cost per GB: divide the listed price by the capacity in GB, for drives that meet the Sony or Microsoft rules above. We do not list drive prices here because they move daily and this site has no retailer link registered yet; when one is added, the link will be marked as an affiliate link.
What changes this page
When Rockstar or either store lists a size, the first table gets a Confirmed row and the scenario table is recalculated with the real number. The preload size tracker shows the figure as soon as a platform page carries it, and the hardware tracker holds the performance facts. See also the preload guide.
