Key Takeaways

  • You can switch between Jason and Lucia, but story progress can lock the active character.
  • Some missions switch you automatically, for example a chase where you go from shooting as Jason to driving as Lucia.
  • Whether they are a couple or accomplices is up to the player, per a Rockstar North developer.
  • Story co-op, a named Trust Meter and permanent loss of a protagonist are not announced.

Yes, you can switch between Jason and Lucia in GTA VI, but not always. A Rockstar North developer says some missions allow free switching, some lock you to one character because the story needs that person's perspective, and some switch you automatically mid-mission. Outside missions the character you are not playing carries on with their own day. Nothing published points to two-player story co-op.

Story limits on switchingConfirmed (developer interview)Story progress can restrict it. Some missions allow free switching; where Rockstar wants one character's perspective, as in GTA V, the switch is locked. Example: an early mission through a high-rise housing estate was freely switchable in development and was fixed to Jason.Famitsu interview with Rob Nelson (Rockstar North), 28 Aug 2026, in Japanese, our translationThere is no full list of locked missions.

The Famitsu material is a developer interview after a gameplay demonstration at Rockstar North, reported by a named outlet. It is not text from Rockstar's own site, and the translation from Japanese is ours.

What the relationship status changes is on the Jason and Lucia relationship page. The rest of the cast, and what Rockstar has and has not said about each, is in the character hub, and other systems are tracked on the mechanics page.
